Serious hikers or horseback riders will love this scenic trail which follows the crest of the Cumberland Mountains dividing Virginia and Kentucky. The trail extends 26 miles from Pound Gap to Potter's Flats in the Breaks Interstate Park. Trailhead parking for horse trailers exists. The trail requires map reading and safety skills. At least 7 access points exists off St.Rt. 630 and 611.

Primitive atmosphere for camping and picnicking. Accessible by boat or foot trail only.
Beautiful scenery (small waterfalls, geological formations, a variety of vegetation) and uncrowded conditions.
Excellent base camp to explore upper reaches of Cumberland Mountain using old roads, logging trams and existing trails.
The trail is 1.5 miles long and is difficult requiring some skill and challenge to travel.
Phillips Creek Loop Trail - More Info

A self guided trail that requires only a narrative trail brochure. There are stops on the trail, the first in a wildlife clearing for deer, turkey, and other wild game.
Next you will pass an old homestead, traces of the house may still be found. There is a White Pine stand that was planted in the 1950s.
The next stop is an Eastern Hemlock Log to count the annual rings. Across the creek you can see the remnants of an old Still site.
At the next stop there is a very pretty waterfall along a high snadstone cliff.
Next is an old Indian hunting camp. As you start down the trail back to the parking lot you will be on an old railroad grade used in the late 1890s and 1900s to haul logs.
The trail is 1.3 miles and is easy requiring only limited skills and has slopes less than 20 percent.

This picnic area features 18 picnic units with table and grill or fireplace. A group shelter is also available.
Hanging Rock Picnic area is located beside Little Stony Creek in a hardwood forest with rhododendron and hemlocks. Huge rock cliffs along the creek and the sound of rushing water add to the natural beauty of the area.
Little Stony Creek provides trout fishing. The Little Stony National Recreation Trail, also in the area, is a lovely 2.8 mile hike.

This 92 Acre lake, surrounded by a lovely wooded area, may be used for fishing or boating. The lake features a paved boat launching ramp, four picnic units with tables and grills, and a 3.7 mile lakeshore loop trail that provides access for shore fishing and wildlife walking. The lake is home to bass, sunfish, tiger, catfish, muskie and a variety of other fish and wildlife. Boating is limited to non-motorized or electric motor boats only.

As one of the largest campgrounds in the Jefferson National Forest, Cave Springs offers a small lake for swimming that is fed by a spring that originates in the mountains above in a cave. Hiking trails developed in the area include one that leads to the cave and stone overlook and loops back to the parking lot. Another trail leads to the Stone Mountain Trail that follows the crest of the mountain for 14.3 miles and ends at Roaring Branch, near Appalachia, VA. There are 41 camping sites with electrical hookups at 21.
