Held annually the second Saturday in September, this festival honors the lives of two local extraordinary musicians –banjoist Moran Lea "Dock" Boggs and ballad singer and songwriter Kate O’Neill Peters Sturgill. Dock Boggs was one of the truly great American folk musicians of the twentieth century.

The festival offers well-known local, regional, and nationally-known traditional musicians and dancers, as well as handmade mountain arts and crafts and home-cooked mountain foods.

The Town of Gate City is home to the Annual Grillin at the Gate festival!!    The event will feature live music from rock to bluegrass, so there's a musical style for everyone to enjoy!  There may even be an Elvis sighting!  Little grillers will have the opportunity to enjoy Piglet's Corner which will be full of children's events to please the entire family. 

Now, let's talk about some good healthy competition!  BBQ vendors from around our region will battle it out for their chance to be "Best of" four categories: chicken, ribs, pork and sauce in order to win the coveted cleaver trophy!  Various food vendors will be set up as well, so if BBQ isn't your think, we've got you covered!  This year, Wild Game category has been added to the competition!

A Beer Garden will be designated with breweries from around the region in a specific location during the festival with drink limits and security.

Clinch River Mandolin Festival & Contest - More Info

The town of St. Paul, VA, is only 35 minutes (on easy four-lane roads) from I- 81 (exit 14) at Abingdon, VA. On Saturday, September 27, 2014 (rain or shine), the town will sponsor an all-day festival immediately next to the pristine, tree-lined Clinch River, called "America's Crown Jewel" by the Nature Conservancy.

The CLINCH RIVER MANDOLIN FESTIVAL AND CONTEST includes an evening open-air (bring lawn chairs) concert by the band Grasstowne (, with mandolinist Alan Bibey, plus festival foods/vendors; a mandolin player workshop (for a fee -- limited numbers); and unplanned jams.

There will be an acoustic (any nonelectric instrument) "open microphone" on stage for preteens only; a nice playground, new handicapped toilets, a bluegrass miniconcert (band TBA) for ATV drivers on the 70-mile Mountain View trail daytime(, a pre-concert band performance that evening, etc.. The Clinch is great for kayaking, fishing, etc. (boat rentals and ATV rentals are available).

The bluegrass/old timey mandolin CONTEST will be during the day and Mr. Bibey will be a judge.
