Spearhead Trails – Coal Canyon Trail System

Coal Canyon currently offers 120 miles of family-friendly riding, built on reclaimed mine lands, which offers sweeping views of the mountains and valleys. With a trailhead at Southern Gap, near Poplar Gap Park, and connectors to Grundy and Vansant, this multi-phase system is great for riders of all skill levels.  Better yet, Coal Canyon now connects to Haysi’s Ridgeview Trail System, for a combined total of over 200 miles of continuous riding pleasure.

Coal Canyon is perfect for riders of all levels of expertise and skill and is definitely family friendly, making it the perfect spot for a weekend of fun.    Southern Gap Outdoor Adventures, located at the trailhead, offers tent camping, full service RV sites, furnished cabins, ATV rentals and a host of organized activities, including archery tag! Their Visitor Center staff organize elk viewing tours, events, and other activities in and around Southern Gap.

For those wishing to ride the trails by day but stay in town at night, Grundy’s Platinum & Gold Hospitality Award winning Comfort Inn is the perfect choice. Just minutes away from the Hoot Owl Hollow trail connector, you’ll find several restaurants, cocktail lounges and specialty shops within walking distance of the hotel. And Grundy’s second trail connector at the three story Walmart Shopping Center, complete with river view, offers trail riders conveniences to gas up, enjoy shopping and dining from their OHV!

Spearhead Trails is known for uniquely different, challenging off-road experiences, but not just the motor-driven type. Whether your pleasure is hiking, biking, horseback riding, or OHV, there is a trail ready to be explored. There are many equestrian trails from High Knob to Wilderness Road… from Pine Mountain to the Scott County Horse Park organized trail rides. For all things outdoor adventure, there’s no question that Heart of Appalachia is YOUR destination of choice.
