Experience the community that so inspired Adriana Trigiani as a child, she immortalized it in her best-selling novels.
Big Stone Gap tells the story of Ave Maria Mulligan, who lived a quiet life among the town’s colorful characters, until her mother’s death reveals a secret that turns her predictable life upside down. Adriani captured the very essence of this small, mountain town in the pages of her Big Stone Gap book series and refused all offers to film this story anywhere other than Big Stone Gap, Virginia. In the fall of 2013, Adriana Trigiani returned to her hometown with a full film crew. Big Stone Gap, the movie, debuts on the silver screen in October 2015.
Visitors can retrace the steps of the Ashley Judd, Whoopi Goldberg, and Patrick Wilson, exploring the real life locations where Ave Maria Mulligan and Jack MacChesney quarreled and canoodled. You might even run into a few local stars from Big Stone Gap itself!
The town has a legacy of literary giants. Be sure to visit the home of John Fox Jr., where the best-selling author penned many of his 12 novels and 45 short stories. Best known for his novel, Trail of the Lonesome Pine (which is an instrumental part of the Big Stone Gap movie and book), Fox appeared on the New York Times Top Ten Bestsellers List numerous times at the turn of the 20th Century. Fox was also a reporter for the New York Times and spent time with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War as a correspondent for Harper’s Weekly.
The town of Big Stone Gap offers visitors a vast array of unique experiences. Taking in a live performance of the Trail of the Lonesome Pine, VA’s Official Outdoor Drama, is a must see if you’re visiting from late June August. But year round, the town welcomes fans and tourists with great hospitality, engaging museums, fun outdoor recreation, and jaw dropping scenery.
