Join The Nature Conservancy in celebration of the earth and the changing of the seasons. Discover a sense of curiosity within the natural world and harvest a sense of peace within the thresholds of the changing environment. Autumn Is Calling: Nature Series is the chance to experience the awe and wonder that is Virginia through a mosaic of outdoor activities from guided hikes amongst colorful foliage, nature bingo, silence, and through shared learning to curate a sense of community. Will you come and join us?

Join TNC staff Nick Proctor (Community Outreach Manager) and Link Elmore (Restoration Coordinator) on Sunday, November 5, 2023 in Dante, VA for a guided out-and-back bicycle ride of the new non-motorized Dante Miners Trail from Laurel Branch (i.e. Dante Campground) to Straight Hollow. This public guided bicycle ride will provide an introduction to the benefits of the VA Energy’s abandoned mine land (AML) program, identify reclaimed AML features, and discuss management challenges associated with invasive species control. TNC staff will also demonstrate various forms of field data collection that assist in the management of the trail corridor, to include a flight demonstration of an aerial drone.

We will meet at the gravel parking area located adjacent to the Dante baseball field at 1pm. The bike ride is approximately 8 miles total and will return to the parking around no later than 5pm. Participants must provide their own bicycle and it is recommended to bring a spare tube in case of a flat (pump will be provided). Safety helmets are required. The trail is a natural surface trail with hybrid, gravel, or mountain bikes recommended. Bring water, snacks, and any other personal items needed.
