Breathtaking Mountains and Music in Dickenson
Dickenson County is full of outdoor adventures from hiking, biking, horseback riding to fishing, whitewater rafting, camping plus many others. The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail begins or ends at the Breaks Interstate Park. There you will enjoy hours of hiking, biking or horseback riding and many other outdoor adventures. Enjoy beautiful mountain views and the deep gorge, known as “the Grand Canyon of the South”. The Rhododendron Restaurant serves some delicious country cooking and you can even take it to go for a fun picnic in the park.
Dickenson County’s part of the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail begins at the Breaks park where you will find a great collection of coal mining memorabilia in the visitor’s center. Travel to Haysi and stop by the Virginia Coal Heritage Museum, owned by Dennis Reedy. In Clinchco, you will find the Coal Miner’s Memorial and another museum “Dennis Reedy Railroad and Coal mining Museum”, a family owned museum with one of the best collections of railroad and coal mining items you will find anywhere.
In Clintwood, you will find the “Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center, where you will be able to hear some of the best of bluegrass and mountain music, tour the Jettie Baker Center and the Dickenson County Chamber of Commerce/Visitor’s Center.
For another great hiking adventure, you may want to travel to Birch Knob Towers to see one of the most breathtaking views you will find in Dickenson County. Sitting on a rock outcrop at the highest summit of Pine Mountain, the view can allow one to see Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. On a Clear day, it is also possible to see Ohio. The area also provides access to the Pine Mountain Trail.
