Event Details

Back by popular demand, Kadencia is an ensemble that plays Bomba and Plena – music and dance styles native to Puerto Rico – in their traditional percussive form. The ensemble’s music and sound pays homage and follows the traditions of Plena from Western Puerto Rico. Their narrative lyrics describe Puerto Rican society, culture, and traditions, utilizing the genre’s long-rooted storytelling traditions to vividly capture aspects of the Puerto Rican experience on the U.S. territory and mainland.
Kadencia will perform on Saturday, Sept. 21st at 7 p.m. at Lee Theatre in Pennington Gap. Tickets are $15 at the door. Children and students admitted free! More information and reservations at proartva.org.
Founded in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico by singer-songwriter Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and percussionist Roberto Candelario, Kadencia now calls Richmond, Virginia its home base and is led by father-son duo of Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and Maurice “Tito” Sanabria.
The band has quickly made an impact in the Mid-Atlantic region through performances that deliver heavy-hitting original music. The band uses Bomba, Plena, and Salsa to promulgate Puerto Rican culture, educate audiences on the Island’s native musical expressions, and make audiences move in ways they never knew
possible.
Kadencia has opened and headlined performances at events such as the Que Pasa? Festival, Richmond’s Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival, Viva RVA Hispanic Music Festival, the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, George Washington University, the Dogwood Dell Festival of the Arts, the Henrico Theater, the Richmond Performing Arts Alliance, Chesterfield County’s Festival de Música, and the Richmond Folk Festival.
