Spearhead Trails – Jawbone Trail

The Jawbone Trail is part of the Spearhead Trail’s system of outdoor recreational trails in Southwest Virginia. Jawbone is located in the western part of Tazwell County immediately adjacent to the town of Richlands. The trail is a multi-purpose off road trail designed for Jeeps, side-by-sides, ATVs and dirt bikes. In fact, as long as you have a permit, you can ride any off-road vehicle or licensed automobile. Obviously, the latter is not a great idea unless it is off-road worthy.

The trails cover a vast 10,000 acres and has 4 overlooks. The trail is unique in that it allows 4-wheel drive vehicles that are street legal in addition to ATVs, UTVs, side by sides, dirt bikes, and is well suited for dual sport bikes. The trail consists mainly of gravel roads and about 30% of the system is dirt with some sections on the Jewel Valley side consisting of scenic asphalt roads. Riders will find a play area with the same grading system of Green trails, Blue trails, and Black Trails as well as some Yellow trails for ATVs only. The trail is designed for Jeeps, 4-wheel drive street legal vehicles so users may find the rating of the trails easier than most of the other trails in our system.
